When unveiling its latest range of iPhones, Apple discontinued the iPhone 5C, its budget model. But it's not all over for cheaper Apple phones, it seems, amid reports that the Cupertino company is
readying an 8GB iPhone 5S to take its place.

A source on Apple's supply chain told TechOne3: “Apple is in development to once again capture the mid-range market with launching the iPhone 5S 8GB variant this year.

"The new variant will go on sale especially in the emerging markets as early as December.”

By “emerging markets”, we take him to mean India and China. There’s no word if the handset will come to the UK, and if so when.

At present, the 16GB iPhone 5S is the cheapest handset Apple sells. An 8GB model would undercut that by some way.

Apple launched the 5S and 5C in September 2013. The 5S was superseded as the flagship by the iPhone 6, and then by the iPhone 6S last week.

The 6S is available to pre-order now, and will go on sale on September 25th.
