A follow-up to the iPhone 5C has been the subject of speculation for yonks, and now here's another rumour to toss onto the pile. According to IHS Technology Research director Kevin Wang, Apple will launch the iPhone 6C halfway through next year.

Like its predecessor, the device will sport a 4-inch screen in a bid to target consumers who don't feel they need a super-sized, five-inch screen-toting flagship phone.

At the moment, the only 4-inch phone Apple sells is the iPhone 5S, and that's at the bottom of the range. The 5C was discontinued earlier this year.

However, it's worth taking this report with a pinch of salt. Apple hasn't released a 4-inch phone since 2013, when it released the iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are 4.7 and 5.5 inches respectively, as are the 6S and 6S Plus. So a new 4-incher would be quite a departure for the Cupertino-based company.

Also, even if customers were willing to downsize – and that's a big 'if' – it's unlikely developers would revert to making apps for the smaller screen size.

Finally, Apple doesn't really 'do' cheap phones. Instead, it reduces the price of its older phones when a new model comes out.

So we're sceptical. But as always, we'd be happy to be proved wrong.
