Google has unveiled a new food photo tool, which is built into its Maps for Android app and allows users to attach images of their meals to places within Maps, in order to improve reviews.

The process is simple. Users simply take a shot of their breakfast, lunch, dinner or grab–and–go coffee.

Maps then fires out a notification saying it’s detected a shot has been taken in a particular location. One more tap then lets foodies post the image, alongside a quick review, onto Maps.

Google earlier this year launched and then quickly shuttered a new food photo app called Tablescape. While that add–on never got a final release, the tech behind it does now seem to be bearing fruit.

At the moment, the new Maps for Android food photo function is limited only to Google’s ‘local guides’ at level three and above. But if it’s a success, expect it to get a wider release.

Google’s move suggests it wants to wrest the initiative from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where most food snaps wind up.
