Steve Wozniak, the man who founded Apple alongside Steve Jobs, has claimed that the Apple Watch does not fit into the original spirit of the company, claiming it’s a status symbol rather than a product designed to make life better.

Speaking on Reddit during an Ask Me Anything session, Wozniak wrote, “I mean I love my Apple Watch, but - it's taken us into a jewelry [sic] market where you're going to buy a watch between $500 or $1100 based on how important you think you are as a person.

“The only difference is the band in all those watches. Twenty watches from $500 to $1100. The band's the only difference? Well this isn't the company that Apple was originally, or the company that really changed the world a lot.”

Wozniak’s comments come less than a week before Apple is due to announce a string of new bands for its Apple Watch. Plans for a sequel to last year’s smartwatch are apparently on hold, although rumours abound about a device with a better battery life and camera.

Apple has not revealed sales figures for the Apple Watch, leaving some to claim the device has struggled to capture the imagination. Anecdotal reports suggest Apple saw sales nosedive after a successful month after launch in April 2015.
